Jurgen Klopp hailed Georginio Wijnaldum’s spirit and recovery powers as the Dutch midfielder was unwell before the clash against Bournemouth. Wijnaldum had missed the draw against West Ham but scored the second goal in our 3-0 win over the Cherries.
Klopp revealed that the former Newcastle star was ill before the game and he wasn’t even in the Liverpool team hotel (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“Gini was not in the team hotel because he had pretty much everything you don’t want to have the night before a game!
“He had diarrhoea and vomiting two nights earlier so he couldn’t come to the team hotel.”
The manager further claimed that Wijnaldum felt better after a few hours of rest, however, the doctor claimed he was still infected.
Klopp even joked that the celebrations with the Dutchman after the second goal was a worry.
“I was only concerned today when he scored a goal and everybody give him a hug, to be honest! That was a problem.”
Wijnaldum has been one of the best players this season, and it should come as no surprise that we did well with him back in the side. The midfielder isn’t the most gifted player on the ball, but his running and composure with the ball at his feet are important to our style of play.
That was on display as he collected a great cross from Andy Robertson in the box. The Dutch midfielder controlled it before lobbing Artur Boruc to give us a 2-0 lead.

Liverpool need the midfielder to be at his best until the end of the season and let’s hope that Wijnaldum doesn’t miss too many games in the coming months.
