Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson isn’t concerned about Virgil van Dijk missing the first leg Champions League round of 16 tie against Bayern Munich.
The Dutch defender is suspended for the first leg after picking up a booking against Napoli in the last group game, however, Alisson claims Liverpool can cope without the centre-back.
The keeper was speaking to Premier League Productions and claimed communication was also important for the backline (h/t Metro):
“All the defenders have played so when one comes in and one leaves, we don’t feel that loss because we’re all used to each other.”
“That the backline are all able to communicate with each other, and know each other really well, is vital for any team. Once you’ve cracked it, you’ve got it – and we seem confident.”
Liverpool have the best defence in the Premier League and kept a clean sheet in their previous game against Bournemouth.
Van Dijk is possibly the best defender in the Premier League, but the rest of the centre-backs have done well this season.
However, Liverpool face a selection issue with Joe Gomez still recovering from surgery and Dejan Lovren unlikely to be fit for the Bayern clash (h/t Metro).
That leaves just Joel Matip as the senior centre-back available for the Bayern tie on Tuesday. Our Champions League defence hasn’t been great either having conceded seven goals from six group games and losing all three away fixtures.
