“We are not blind – we saw him, we liked him” – Liverpool manager confirms interest in English youngster starring in Germany

Latest Liverpool transfer news: Reds were interested in signing Jadon Sancho from Manchester City

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that the Reds were interested in English sensation Jadon Sancho from Manchester City.

The 18-year-old joined Klopp’s former club Borussia Dortmund in 2017 and has been a revelation in the Bundesliga.

The English youngster has seven goals and nine assists from 22 Bundesliga appearances this season and has helped the team to top spot in the league standings.

Klopp was asked about the growth in English players signing for German clubs and the manager claimed it would be tough for one English club to sign players from another (h/t Sky Sports):

“With the English players, it is a smart idea because we would never have a chance to get Sancho.

“We are not blind – we saw him, we liked him and then we think ‘can we get him?’ No. Because English clubs don’t sell them to other English clubs.

“I don’t know exactly what the reason is for that but they don’t do it. Now they can go to Germany, which is a wonderful league.”

Sancho’s progress at Dortmund has been great, and it would have been interesting to see how things would have progressed if he became a Red.

Big clubs don’t like to sell to their rivals

Klopp hit the nail on the head by suggesting that English clubs don’t sell to others, but there have been some examples of deals going through.

The last thing any supporter would want is a rival side to be strengthened, but we have seen Arsenal do this in recent years by selling their stars to Manchester City and Manchester United.

Liverpool have also sold some big names to rivals in the past, but that was mostly related to the players seeking a move away from the club, such as Raheem Sterling and Fernando Torres.
