Liverpool FC transfer news: Matthijs de Ligt chooses Barcelona over Liverpool
Matthijs de Ligt is the next big defender coming from the Netherlands, and the youngster recently claimed he was open to playing next to Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.
The 19-year-old captain of Ajax has been linked with other top clubs such as Bayern Munich, Juventus and Barcelona too, according to Calciomercato.
The in-demand centre-back has the potential to become one of the best in the world, and the report claims that De Ligt will move to Barcelona.
De Ligt delight for Barca
The 19-year-old would be quite a coup for Barcelona, and the Catalans have a great relationship with Ajax having signed several players over the years.
Another Ajax star, Frenkie de Jong, has agreed to join Barcelona this season, and it will be interesting to see De Ligt follows suit.
De Ligt would have been a quality addition to Liverpool and could have taken our defence to another level.
The 19-year-old would not come on the cheap but the Reds have proved they will spend for a player that they want.
Jurgen Klopp splashed the cash on Alisson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk, with three of those players starring for us this season.
There still is time before the deal is finalised and hopefully, we can spring a surprise and enhance our defence for the upcoming season.

The Reds already have a quality young centre-back in Joe Gomez, and De Ligt’s purchase would only enhance the competition for places in our defence.
