Latest Liverpool news: Joe Gomez to return to training after international break

Jurgen Klopp provided a positive update on English defender Joe Gomez and when he would return.

The centre-back hasn’t played since suffering a lower leg fracture against Burnley at Turf Moore. He was expected to return in February, but his fracture wasn’t healing well, and he had to undergo surgery.

The Englishman was in great form alongside Virgil van Dijk at the start of the campaign. Liverpool have had their problems in the centre-back position this season with Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip also picking up injuries.

Klopp was speaking ahead of the clash against Fulham and claimed there are no new problems with Gomez (h/t Mirror):

“Very positive. He is not even in the everyday (medical) updates, so that is all positive.”

The German further claimed the Englishman would be back in full-training after the international break.

“We expect him to be back after the international break – in full training, for sure, and then we will see how long it takes.”

A boost for the Reds at the back

The Tottenham game after the break could be too soon for the Englishman to play, but his return is great for the remainder of the campaign.

Gomez can also play right-back and provide an alternative to Trent Alexander-Arnold. Joel Matip has done a wonderful job alongside Van Dijk, and the added competition could push the Cameroon star to another level.
