Latest Liverpool news: Fans back Virgil van Dijk after mistake against Fulham

Ryan Babel had spoken about knowing a weakness in Virgil van Dijk’s game as the former Red faced his old side at Craven Cottage.

Fulham were never in the game as we dominated possession and scored, thanks to Sadio Mane. However, Liverpool could not score a second goal despite having some glorious chances. We were made to pay in the second half as Van Dijk and Alisson made a hash of a poor James Milner clearance.

It seemed to be written in the star as Ryan Babel chased Van Dijk and in the confusion, got the ball and slotted into an empty net.

To his credit, Babel did not celebrate, but Van Dijk certainly did not enjoy the moment. The Dutchman was brilliant at the back throughout the game but this mistake almost felt like we had given away the title race.

Milner makes amends

Mane won us a penalty after the equaliser from Babel and Milner made no mistake from the spot. The Reds held onto the lead until the end of the game, with Van Dijk doing well to thwart any attacks that Fulham had.

The Dutchman certainly proved that he was human. This was his first big mistake since giving away a penalty to Manchester City earlier in the season. Riyad Mahrez missed that while Milner saved him this time.

Many Liverpool fans backed the defender after his mistake and let him have a pass with this error.
