Latest Liverpool news: Xherdan Shaqiri ruled out of international break for Switzerland

Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri has been ruled out of Switzerland’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Georgia and Denmark with a groin problem, reports the Mirror.

The Swiss star hasn’t featured much for the Reds with his last appearance coming in the 0-0 draw against Manchester United.

Shaqiri was an unused sub in the 2-1 win over Fulham at the weekend. The report adds that the attacker joined up with the national team but went through an examination which highlighted the problem.

Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic will name a replacement on Tuesday and the team released a statement too (h/t Mirror):

“The Swiss Football A national team will be without Xherdan Shaqiri in the two EURO 2020 qualifiers in Georgia (23 March 2019 in Tbilisi) and Denmark (26 March 2019 in Basel).

“The attacking midfielder suffers from a painful inflammation in the groin.”

Shaqiri having an inconsistent season for the Reds

The former Stoke City star came on the cheap and had an initial impact for the Reds. The attacker has found the back of the net six times from 21 appearances this season, however, his game time has reduced dramatically in recent weeks.

Even in the 2-1 win over Fulham, Jurgen Klopp brought on Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge in the final minutes, although the Shaq was on the bench.

Hopefully, the injury is not serious and Shaqiri can be part of the squad that faces Tottenham after the international break.
