Liverpool FC transfer news: Reds to battle Manchester City for Ben Chilwell

Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo) claims that the Reds are interested in Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell.

The youngster has been on the rise at the Foxes in recent years, and the report adds that Manchester City are also keeping tabs on the 22-year-old, who has a contract with the club till 2024.

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is at the helm of the Foxes and recently told Sky Sports that he tried to sign the English youngster while at Anfield.

“I’m just in the door and I can see he’s a huge talent, I tried to take him to Liverpool when I was there.”

The 22-year-old is now the first-choice left-back for the Premier League side and has 29 league appearances with two assists to his name this season.

Quality competition for Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson is possibly the best left-back in the Premier League but doesn’t face a lot of quality competition for the starting spot at the club.

The Scottish captain has gotten better since signing for the Reds last season, but Alberto Moreno hasn’t been able to put pressure on Robertson this season for a shot in the first-team.

Liverpool have also played James Milner as the left-back in certain games to give Robbo a break.

Chilwell would be a quality signing for the Reds and Jurgen Klopp could develop the youngster into a world-class left-back.

The German has done that with several players at the club, and it will be interesting to see if Rodgers is willing to let go of the Englishman.

The former Liverpool manager took over from Claude Puel midway through the season, and would be looking to end the season with as many wins as possible.
