Liverpool FC transfer news: Dean Ashton doesn’t believe Ben Godfrey is ready for big move
Ben Godfrey has been one of the stars in the Championship this season. The 21-year-old centre-back has helped Norwich to the top of the Championship and the Canaries look a good bet for promotion.
The Liverpool Echo reports that Godfrey has been linked with a move to the Reds with Manchester United also interested in the centre-back.
However, former England striker Dean Ashton doesn’t believe the youngster is ready for a big move.
Speaking to Football League World (h/t Liverpool Echo), the former England striker claimed that moving to United or Liverpool would be a big leap for the defender.
Ashton also wanted Godfrey to stay with the Canaries and backed him to make it big later:
“I’m sure he’ll get there in the end but it’s such a big step to go to the Premier League in terms of quality and I would be very surprised if he was ready right now to step into a team like that.
“He should stay where he is because he is getting a great education at Norwich, he’s played in the team and hopefully he’ll get his chance in the Premier League next season anyway.”
Godfrey doing it at the other end too
The youngster can also play as a left-back and has been involved in five goals this season for the Canaries.
The English centre-back could be a smart signing given his potential, however, Norwich’s possible return to the Premier League could be a quality test for the 21-year-old.
The Reds have seen youngsters such as Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson come good, despite coming through the lower leagues, and Godfrey could turn out to be a similar story if we sign him.

Liverpool have the best defence in the Premier League this season, but we should not be averse to signing a quality player that has loads of potential.
