Liverpool FC transfer news: Ajax boss claims Matthijs de Ligt will move to England or Spain
Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar has confirmed that star defender Matthijs de Ligt will move to either England or Spain.
The 19-year-old has been exceptional for the Dutch giants this season and led them to the Champions League semi-finals.
Ajax lost to Tottenham in dramatic fashion with De Ligt opening the scoring at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
The Metro claims that Barcelona are looking to complete a deal for De Ligt as they have done with Frenkie de Jong, however, Liverpool have been linked with the centre-back.
Speaking to Sky Italia, Van der Sar suggested England or Spain would be De Ligt’s next destination (h/t Metro):
“I think these will be De Ligt’s final games with Ajax.
“But I hope he goes out on a high. He’s been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club.
“I think he’ll go to England or Spain.”
A Dutch pairing on the cards at Liverpool?
De Ligt and Virgil van Dijk are partners in the defence for the Dutch national side, and the Metro claims that playing alongside the Liverpool star would be appealing.
The 19-year-old was linked with Manchester United and the report claims that the defender turned down a move to Old Trafford.
Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world and playing under Jurgen Klopp could see De Ligt improve in the coming years.
The Reds have Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip as the other centre-backs, but the trio have had injury problems this season.
