Bundesliga club’s CEO hands boost with claims that star forward could join Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Liverpool FC transfer news: Leipzig CEO claims Liverpool could sign Timo Werner

Timo Werner is one of the hottest properties in the Bundesliga and the Mirror reports that Liverpool are still in the hunt for the 23-year-old.

The forward has racked up 16 goals and 7 assists in the Bundesliga as Leipzig are set to play in the Champions League next season.

The report adds that Jurgen Klopp admires the forward but Werner seemed set to join Bayern Munich in the summer.

Timo Werner of RB Leipzig

The forward has just one year left on his current deal, and the report claims that Werner has rejected talks of extending the contract with Leipzig.

However, Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has suggested that the club have not agreed on terms with the Bundesliga giants and Liverpool are still in the reckoning to sign Werner.

Mintzlaff spoke to Sky and claimed there were a number of clubs where Werner could head off to (h/t Mirror):

“The situation is still the same. Timo Werner would rather not sign an extension.

“But that could change. I don’t think it’s completely out of the question that he could extend his deal. We haven’t talked to Bayern Munich about Timo Werner yet.

“Maybe he doesn’t even want to go to Munich. Maybe he would rather join Tuchel in Paris, Klopp at Liverpool or Favre at Dortmund.”

Liverpool need another centre-forward?

Werner primarily plays as the central striker and we could do with a quality back-up for Roberto Firmino.

The German could also usurp Firmino should he impress at the club but the Reds have Rhian Brewster coming through the ranks. The youngster should be part of the first-team next season.

Divock Origi has also impressed for Liverpool this season. Werner would be an excellent signing for the Reds and could develop into a fantastic player under Klopp.

The Reds have made some shrewd signings under the German manager and hopefully, we get the right players to join once the transfer window opens.
