Latest Liverpool news: Liverpool do not have a great record under Champions League final referee

Slovenia’s Damir Skomina will referee the Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham. The final of the tournament will take place at the Wanda Metropolitano on 1st June in Madrid.

Both Liverpool and Tottenham scripted epic comebacks to reach the final. The Reds should start as slight favourites given their performance in the Premier League and the wins over Spurs in the league.

However, the Reds do not have a great record under the Slovenian referee. The Mirror reports that Liverpool have lost four out of the five games that Skomina has officiated.

The first loss was against Fiorentina in 2009 before another defeat at the hands of Besiktas in 2015.

The Reds also lost to Spanish club Villarreal the following season and then saw a 4-2 second leg defeat against Roma last season.

Fortunately, we won the first leg semi-final massively to reach the final against Real Madrid last time around. There is some good news for the Reds as Skomina officiated the 1-0 win over Napoli earlier in the season.

A controversial figure

The referee was in charge of Manchester United’s away game against Paris Saint-Germain in this season’s competition. Skomina awarded a last-minute penalty to United which saw the Red Devils eliminate PSG in the round of 16.

Liverpool have been excellent throughout the season and we need to play at our best on June 1.

Spurs can spring a surprise as they did against Ajax, and we have to be wary of the threat possessed by Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
