Liverpool FC transfer news: Matthijs de Ligt does not confirm move to Barcelona

Liverpool’s hope of signing Matthijs de Ligt has been boosted as the Dutch defender hasn’t confirmed a move to Barcelona.

The 19-year-old has been excellent for Ajax this season and helped them to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The youngster also led Ajax to another Eredivisie title and told Fox Sports he didn’t want to talk much about his future but confirmed a move to Barcelona hasn’t taken place (h/t Mirror):

“This is not the time to talk about my future.

“I don’t know if I will go with Frenkie de Jong [to Barcelona]. I still have to analyse things and see everything. We’ll see what happens.”

The young defender added that nothing has been decided yet and a transfer could take place at the end of the summer.

Liverpool in the race to sign De Ligt

The Mirror adds that De Ligt hasn’t agreed on terms with Barcelona and that leaves the door open for Liverpool as they look to sign the 19-year-old.

De Ligt would form a great partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk, and the pair have been excellent for the Netherlands on the international scene.

The report adds that Barcelona remain the favourites to land De Ligt after capturing his Ajax teammate, Frenkie de Jong.

Joe Gomez has been excellent for the Reds this season but a fracture reduced his playing time in the second half of the campaign.

Fortunately, Joel Matip stepped up for Liverpool and Dejan Lovren has also done a decent job when the Cameroon defender was unable to partner Van Dijk. Should De Ligt arrive, we would become too strong at the back.
