Latest Liverpool news: Liverpool might not participate in revamped Club World Cup

The Mirror reports that Liverpool might not play in the Club World Cup even if they defeat Tottenham in the Champions League final on Saturday.

The tournament has been shifted from its slot and the next edition will only be held in 2021. The report adds that FIFA have planned a revamp of the tournament and this will be held every four years.

The Club World Cup is set to feature 24 teams rather than the traditional eight, and the report claims that Liverpool have already been invited for the upcoming edition.

The Club World Cup replaces the Confederations Cup, which featured the best international teams from every continent.

Liverpool could miss out on a huge fee

The report adds that members of the European Club Association (ECA) have declined the invitation to participate in the new tournament.

Liverpool are a part of the ECA and the report claims that holding the tournament during the Confederations Cup slot would affect pre-season preparations for the European clubs.

Liverpool are yet to win this competition despite reaching the final in 1981 and 2005. It will be interesting to see how FIFA deal with the scheduling of the Club World Cup.
