Latest Liverpool news: Sadio Mane confirms he held talks with Manchester United but snubbed them
Sadio Mane has been one of our best buys under German manager Jurgen Klopp. The Senegal international signed from Southampton for £34million in 2016 (h/t Metro), and has improved with every season at the club.
The forward bagged the Golden Boot alongside Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this season, and looks set to achieve a lot of glory at Liverpool.
The formed RB Salzburg attacker was in demand prior to his move to the Reds, with the Metro reporting that Louis van Gaal wanted the Senegal international at Old Trafford in 2015.
The report adds that Southampton did not allow him to leave that season, and Mane confirmed that he held talks with United in 2016 before joining Liverpool while speaking to the Mirror (h/t Metro):
“Yes, I was really, really close because I even met up with them. So I was coming, I was there and I spoke with the boss who was there before (Van Gaal).”
The 27-year-old explained why he changed his decision with a call from manager Jurgen Klopp:
“They made an offer, but in the same week, Klopp called me. He said: ‘I think it’s the right club. The right coach for me, and I think it’s better that I go to Liverpool’. For me I think it was the right time as well. I said, ‘I am going to Liverpool.’”
Mane doing his bit for the Reds
The Senegal star has formed a great partnership with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah at Liverpool.
The move has worked out great for both the player and the club, while Manchester United have only gone downhill since replacing Van Gaal.
