Liverpool FC transfer news: Joel Matip happy at Liverpool but doesn’t rule out exit

Joel Matip had an excellent finish to the campaign with Liverpool and won the Champions League trophy.

The Cameroon defender kept Harry Kane quiet in the final and was rock-solid alongside Virgil van Dijk after Joe Gomez’s injury.

This was possibly the centre-back’s best season since his move from Schalke and the Liverpool Echo reports that the 27-year-old could be handed a new deal at Anfield.

Matip has improved substantially over the past eight months or so. The defender claimed he was happy at Liverpool but wasn’t ruling out anything when asked about his future (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“In football, nothing is impossible. Currently I have [had] two years contract with the Reds. After initial difficulties and injuries, I feel comfortable in Liverpool now.

“There is still a lot of room for Schalke in my heart. That never stops. Accordingly, my worries about this club were very big. I try to watch every single game on TV. It can only get better for the new season.”

An interesting season ahead for our defence

Van Dijk’s presence in the team has made us incredibly difficult to beat. The former Saint helped us to the best defensive record in the Premier League last season, and that is an excellent base to build on.

Matip only got his chance in the team due to Gomez’s injury, and it will be interesting to see if he starts as the first-choice alongside Van Dijk next season.

Gomez is back to full fitness and was a part of England’s Nations League finals squad. The youngster did well in the heart of the defence before suffering a fracture in December.
