“This would be a good signing” – Liverpool legend backs relegated star to do well at Anfield

Latest Liverpool transfer news: Steve Nicol wants Neil Etheridge to replace Simon Mignolet at Liverpool

Former Liverpool star Steve Nicol wants Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge to replace Simon Mignolet next season. The Express claims that Liverpool could be in the market for a new keeper as Mignolet is expected to leave.

The Belgian only played in the domestic cup competitions but was a great presence in the side that won the Champions League final.

Mignolet is one of the more experienced members from the current Liverpool team but could do with more first-team starts.

Neil Etheridge

The report claims that the Belgian wanted to leave a year ago and Nicol believes the Cardiff City keeper would be a great replacement.

Speaking to ESPN FC, the former Liverpool star spoke about Cardiff’s defence but backed Etheridge to do well at Anfield (h/t Express

):

“I think this would be a good signing. I think the 69 goals he [Etheridge] let in, he probably had no chance with 55 of them, let’s be honest.

“Mignolet has to go, he has to go and play. You need a back-up who is going to be happy to be there but who is of a certain level that whenever something may happen to Alisson, you’re going to put Etheridge in and he’s going to do a great job.”

Etheridge knows his way around the leagues

Nicol harped on the fact that Etheridge also played in the lower leagues and believed the deal works for both parties.

Jurgen Klopp has done well with a couple of his buys from relegated clubs. Xherdan Shaqiri had some great moments this season after joining from Stoke City.

The success story of Andy Robertson is another highlight of Klopp’s transfers. The Scot signed from a relegated Hull City and is now one of the best left-backs in the world.

Etheridge would be a decent replacement for Mignolet and he was impressive for Cardiff even though they were relegated.
