Liverpool FC transfer news: French expert warns Reds against signing two Ligue 1 stars

French football expert Rich Allen has warned Liverpool over signing two Ligue 1 stars.

The Mirror reports that Nicolas Pepe and Memphis Depay have been linked with the Champions League winners.

Pepe had an excellent season with Lille racking up 22 goals in all competitions while Depay has resurrected his career at Lyon.

However, Allen was speaking on the Blood Red channel podcast (h/t Mirror) and highlighted Depay’s frustrating nature on the field:

“Yes Depay has got his career back on track to a degree but he’s still an intensely frustrating player.”

Allen warned that Depay has an “inflated ego” and his “head disappears”. The French expert believes that introducing the Dutch attacker to Liverpool could see some problems in the dressing room:

“I think any club going for him has to bear that in mind – that he has to be the number one player in the team, that he has to be loved, adored and pampered – and if I’m Liverpool, I’m not necessarily sure I’d be looking to introduce a character like his into that squad, which has fantastic camaraderie and togetherness.”

Pepe’s price is a problem for Allen

The expert then spoke about Pepe and claimed that the Ivorian winger is a bit of a gamble for a fee of around €65m-€70m (h/t Mirror).

Allen further added that Pepe might be a squad player at the Reds, and spending a huge amount on someone who isn’t first-choice would rule the Reds out:

“I could see him at a Premier League team, but for that amount of money, you’d be buying him to be a first-team player, which for me would probably rule Liverpool out.”

Liverpool are yet to sign any players in the summer, and it will be interesting to see who we target.

The Reds released a couple of first-team stars that could be replaced in the transfer window.

Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno left as their contracts expired at Anfield, and we could do with a left-back coming in to cover Andy Robertson.
