Latest Liverpool news: Fernando Torres announces retirement from football

Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres announced his retirement from football after a glittering career that saw him lift several trophies.

The Spaniard made a name for himself coming through the ranks at Atletico Madrid and even captained the team.

Torres won the World Cup but he was never the same Liverpool player

Torres then signed for Liverpool in what was a huge deal for us back then, and immediately warmed up to the fans by scoring a goal on his home debut against Chelsea.

The forward was one of the best strikers in the game during his time at Liverpool, but injuries limited his appearances in the 2008 and 2009 campaigns.

Torres still managed to score 81 goals in 142 games for us but then broke hearts with a transfer to Chelsea.

Torres wins trophies at the Blues

In a blockbuster move, Chelsea signed Torres while Liverpool bought Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez in January 2011. Torres was never the same player that he was with the Reds, though he won the Champions League, Europa League and the FA Cup with the Blues.

The Spaniard left after four seasons to join Milan on loan before making the switch back to Atletico Madrid.

He won the Europa League with them and missed out on another Champions League title. Torres ended his career playing for Sagan Tosu in Japan.

Torres was extremely successful with the Spanish national side too as he won the 2010 World Cup and lifted two Euro titles.

The 35-year-old did provide some great memories for our supporters and here are some of their reactions from Twitter.
