Liverpool FC transfer news: Reds hopeful of signing Sepp van der Berg from PEC Zwolle

The Liverpool Echo reports that Liverpool are hopeful of signing 17-year-old Dutch defender Sepp van der Berg.

The centre-back is a regular for Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle, and the report claims that clubs such as Ajax and Bayern Munich are interested in him.

The 17-year-old played 16 times for the Dutch side and made 10 starts last season.

The report claims that Liverpool see Van der Berg as a defender similar to Joe Gomez when he was signed from Charlton. The English defender started his career as a left-back for the Reds before becoming an England international.

Gomez has grown in stature under Jurgen Klopp, and the report claims that Van der Berg is seen as a player for the long-term.

The report adds that Sampdoria bid €2.5million for the 17-year-old in January, and Melwood staff believe the youngster is ready to play in the first-team from day one.

Liverpool already have quality centre-backs at the moment, and Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever is another player who could play some minutes for us next season.

The report claims that the next 72 hours are important as we look to sign the 17-year-old.

Klopp will give players a chance

Hoever got some minutes last season and so did youngster Rafa Camacho. Klopp isn’t averse to handing starlets a chance, and it will be interesting to see which players break into the team this season.
