Latest Liverpool news: Fowler worried about stars away on international duty

Robbie Fowler is concerned about several Liverpool stars away on international duty this summer.

Many Reds were busy in the previous summer due to the World Cup, and this time around, the Copa America and Africa Cup of Nations are in full flow.

Roberto Firmino and Alisson have been great for Brazil as they face Argentina in the Copa America, and Fowler provided Jurgen Klopp with a warning ahead of the new season.

The Reds legend wrote in his column in the Sunday Mirror (h/t Daily Star), and was worried about how training would be affected:

“It’s bad enough the Copa America doesn’t finish until July 7.

“Because that means players such as Roberto Firmino and Alisson possibly won’t be back in training until August.”

The former striker was concerned regarding the scheduling of the Africa Cup of Nations:

“But it is insane that the Africa Cup of Nations won’t finish until after the third week of July.

“There is a good chance that Sadio Mane and Mo Salah will be involved in the last four and that will surely see them miss the start of the season.”

The players need to rest mentally too

Fowler added that players would not feel physically tired if the sports science teams did their bit, but had a little go at Guinea after Naby Keita’s injury.

The legend added that mental tiredness could be an issue, and players need to freshen up later:

“It’s the mental tiredness. The players need a break to freshen up, to get away from playing with so much at stake all the time.”

Salah and Mane also participated in the World Cup, but it didn’t seem to affect them last season.
