Latest Liverpool news: Mohamed Salah set to return for Community Shield clash after AFCON exit

The Liverpool Echo reports that Mohamed Salah will be given a three-week break after his exit from the African Cup of Nations.

Egypt were one of the favourites for the title but suffered a shock defeat to South Africa in the round of 16.

Salah didn’t have a great game as he was heavily man-marked by the South Africans, and the report claims that the forward was close to tears after the match ended 1-0.

The report adds that Salah will miss the pre-season games against Tranmere and Bradford City. The Liverpool forward won’t be available for the US tour and the friendly against Napoli at Edinburgh.

However, he should be back for the clash against Lyon in Geneva. The report adds that Brazilian pair, Roberto Firmino and Alisson, should be back for the clash against the Ligue 1 side.

That should give the trio enough time to feature for the Community Shield clash against Manchester City on 4 August before our Premier League opener against Norwich City five days later.

One player remains away on international duty

Naby Keita’s AFCON was cut short with an injury, and he is expected to return to Merseyside after a mini-break.

The only Liverpool player away on international duty is Senegal’s Sadio Mane. The forward has been in great form for the African side, and it will be interesting to see if he leads them to the AFCON title.
