Latest Liverpool news: Adrian’s blushes saved by team against Southampton
Liverpool were handed a boost before the start of the Southampton game as Adrian was declared fit for the clash.
The Spaniard helped us win the UEFA Super Cup by saving a spot-kick in the penalty shootout, but picked up an injury after a fan slid into him during the celebrations.
The 32-year-old is expected to be our No.1 for a few more weeks but had a torrid afternoon at St Mary’s.
The keeper had been charged down early in the game and was lucky not to give a goal away.
However, the Spaniard passed the ball straight to Danny Ings in the second half and the former Liverpool star didn’t have to do much to score past us.
Liverpool had taken the lead thanks to a thunderbolt from Sadio Mane and the points looked safe once Roberto Firmino had scored in the second half.
However, Adrian’s mistake allowed Southampton back into the game, and we were a tad lucky to come out with the three points.
Fans concerned about our goalkeeping department
The Reds had 35-year-old Andy Lonergan on the bench as cover for Adrian but the veteran has never played at the top level.
Our next fixture is against Arsenal and Adrian has to cut out these errors if we are to win games comfortably.
Many Liverpool fans were concerned about the error from the Spaniard and some even called for youngster Caoimhin Kelleher to start games.
Kelleher distribution would have come in handy for that one ⚽️
