Latest Liverpool news: Wijnaldum claims Adrian’s reaction to Saints mistake is more important for the keeper
Adrian reached the high of helping Liverpool win the UEFA Super Cup, but he was brought back down to earth at St. Mary’s this weekend.
The former West Ham goalkeeper will feature in the starting XI until Alisson returns from a calf problem but made a major error against Southampton.
The 32-year-old had done pretty well by stopping Maya Yoshida in the first half. Adrian reacted well to Joel Matip’s attempts at clearing a cross but gifted a pass to Danny Ings late in the game.
The ball deflected off the former Liverpool striker and the Saints were handed a lifeline. Fortunately, we held on for a 2-1 win and Georginio Wijnaldum has backed the keeper.
The Dutch defender added that Adrian’s reaction to this mistake will be important in the coming weeks and added that all players take time to adjust (h/t Mirror):
“How is he going to react to the mistake? I think that is more important than the mistake itself. Everyone can make a mistake, also a goalkeeper. But the only thing is, he is a goalkeeper, and if he make a mistake, a lot of times, it will result in a goal.
“Everyone needs time to adjust. He is just in for, not even two weeks, so we have to get used to each other.”
Alisson made a similar error last season
The Brazilian also made a huge error last season against Leicester City but learned from that. Adrian is a quality back-up keeper and he seems more confident in the air than Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius.
However, the ball distribution from the keep can take a bit of a back seat until Alisson is back.

The Reds have a quality team all-round and Adrian can make things easy by not overplaying it when under pressure.
