Liverpool FC transfer news: Achterberg confirms signing Vorm has been discussed

Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach John Achterberg confirmed that Michel Vorm’s name has been discussed by the Champions League holders.

The Reds have seen Alisson pick up a calf injury in the first game of the Premier League season while Adrian was declared fit to play against Southampton at the weekend.

Andy Lonergan was on the bench for the trip to St Mary’s and we could be in further trouble if either of the senior keepers picks up a problem.

Vorm was one of the best players for Swansea during his spell in the Premier League but his move to Tottenham saw him become the understudy to Hugo Lloris.

The Dutchman left Spurs at the end of last season, and Achterberg told NOS (h/t Liverpool Echo) that having quality keepers in the side isn’t an issue:

“A good third goalie at a top club is not a superfluous luxury, I have always said this. Michel Vorm’s arrival has been discussed.”

The coach praised Lonergan for his experience in the lower leagues and added that Caoimhin Kelleher is a decent option too given that the academy starlet plays for Ireland’s youth teams.

A good move for Liverpool?

Liverpool cannot buy a senior keeper from another club as the transfer window has closed but they can sign free agents.

It will be difficult to find a better option than Vorm given his experience in the Premier League. However, the Dutch keeper would be the third choice below Adrian and above Lonergan.

Liverpool cannot take risks with this position, and pushing Kelleher into the starting XI would be riskier than playing Vorm.
