Liverpool trigger a clause in Joel Matip’s contract and extend his stay

The Athletic (h/t Daily Star) reports that Liverpool have triggered a clause in Joel Matip’s contract and extended his stay by a year.

The former Schalke centre-back has impressed at the back since we signed Virgil van Dijk, and helped us land the Champions League last season.

The 28-year-old was signed on a free from the Bundesliga side and was a free agent at the end of this season.

However, the contract extension keeps him at Anfield till 2021, and the report adds that the centre-back will be handed a new deal soon.

Matip keeping Gomez out

The Cameroon defender has become one of the best in the Premier League and is keeping Joe Gomez out of the starting XI.

The 28-year-old isn’t as quick as Gomez but has been more consistent at the back since the start of last season.

The centre-back also has great ball control and dribbles out from the back, thus providing us with a different strategy to attack the opposition.

Matip deserves a new deal basis his recent performances, and hopefully, he is offered the right contract to continue partnering Van Dijk at the back.
