James Milner has been one of the best free-agent signings by Liverpool in the Premier League era.
The former Manchester City, Newcastle United and Leeds United midfielder has grown at Anfield despite being in his 30s and helped us win the Champions League title last season.
The Englishman is also extremely versatile and played one season as our first-choice left-back.
Milner is the ultimate professional and it comes as no surprise that Liverpool want to extend his stay with the side. The Athletic’s James Pearce confirmed that Milner’s deal is a priority for the Reds during a Q+A session.
The journalist also spoke about two other players and their deals but added that the Reds aren’t in a rush regarding these two contracts at the moment (h/t Daily Star):
“The priority for LFC is Milner. He’s the only one of the three who is out of contract at the end of this season.
“As I reported earlier this week talks are ongoing.
“With LFC triggering the extra year option in Matip’s contract he’s now retained until 2021 and it’s the same with Wijnaldum so no massive rush there.”
The 33-year-old might not start regularly for the Reds, but his experience and leadership are important for the team.
The midfielder might have lost a bit of pace through the years, but he still puts in quality performances for the Reds.
It will be difficult to find a model professional like Milner, and the Reds needs to keep hold of the Englishman for as long as possible.
