Jurgen Klopp claims Naby Keita could be back on Wednesday
Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita will be back for the side on Wednesday, according to Jurgen Klopp.
The Guinea international hasn’t played for the Reds since the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City, and it will be interesting to see if he features during the Carabao Cup game in midweek.
The former RB Leipzig star has struggled for fitness since a big-money move to Liverpool and will not be ready for the clash against Chelsea.
Keita took part in first-team training on Friday and Klopp confirmed that he was close to a return (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“He (Keita) is close but the matchday squad is not yet the target.
“It is a few sessions training with the team.
“We’d only put him in if we didn’t have enough players but I hope we will have enough players for the matchday squad.
“Wednesday is the target I will say and then we will see.”
Carabao Cup the chance for some players to impress
The Reds face MK Dons on Wednesday as the Carabao Cup journey begins. Liverpool lost in the opening game of the competition in the previous season, and we should send out an experimental side at Stadium MK.
The midfielder should be part of the team, should he regain his fitness, and it is important for him to kick on this season.
The 24-year-old struggled for form in the previous campaign and needs to step up if he wants to cement a place in Klopp’s starting XI.
