Joel Matip to miss Champions League clash against RB Salzburg

Liverpool defender Joel Matip will not face RB Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The centre-back picked up an injury in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United but it isn’t a major problem (h/t LiverpoolFC.com).

The former Schalke star has been excellent alongside Virgil van Dijk and should be replaced by Joe Gomez in the defence.

Matip isn’t certain of returning for the game against Leicester at the weekend and it will be interesting to see how the defence does without him on Wednesday.

Liverpool fans back Gomez to start

The English defender was the first-choice partner for Van Dijk last season before suffering a fracture. Gomez took a long time to recover, which saw Matip take over his position, and this is a great chance for the Englishman to show that he is back to his best.

Salzburg will not make it easy for the Reds after their impressive win over Genk on the first matchday. However, Liverpool need a win after their defeat to Napoli in their group opener.

The Reds should field a strong XI against the Austrians, and come into the game after a tough win over Sheffield.

Gomez didn’t play any minutes against the Blades at the weekend, and several fans were certain he would put up a great showing at Anfield.
