“That is my main goal” – Welsh starlet still dreams of playing for Liverpool despite ongoing injury

Ben Woodburn still aims of playing for Liverpool

Ben Woodburn became the youngest goal scorer for Liverpool when he found the back of the net against Leeds in 2016.

The Welsh attacker seemed set to feature regularly in the first-team squad, however, his progress hasn’t been all that great.

A loan move to Sheffield United last season didn’t work and he was sent to Oxford in the summer. The youngster is back at Liverpool, recovering from an injury he picked up, and told the Daily Mail that he still wants to play for the Reds.

The youngster highlighted Harry Wilson, who has become a Premier League regular for Bournemouth now, and wants to develop at Oxford first (h/t Daily Mail):

“I think my eyes are always going to be set on playing at Liverpool. That is my main goal, that is who I grew up supporting and have been for years.

“Harry Wilson did well at Derby last season and is on loan at Bournemouth now, he’s a couple of years older than me.

“A lot of managers look at who is trustworthy, who has games under their belt and that’s what I am aiming for with Oxford this season.”

Woodburn faces tough competition for places

The Welsh youngster’s comments are spot on about doing well at Oxford but he faces some incredible competition for places at Anfield.

Rhian Brewster, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott all impressed in the 2-0 Carabao Cup win over MK Dons while Wilson has been doing a decent job for the Cherries.

Woodburn would need to have an incredible season with Oxford to have a chance of featuring in our senior side next season.

The Reds also have a lot of quality first-team players and it will be interesting to see how Woodburn does for the remainder of the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp has always given young players the chance to succeed, and it will be an amazing story if Woodburn makes it back to the Liverpool senior side.
