Xherdan Shaqiri was one of our surprise signings last season. The Swiss star was relegated with Stoke but was snapped up as a part of our summer spree.
Shaqiri was never going to start regularly for us but had some important moments off the bench. He helped us defeat Manchester United at Anfield and also played a crucial role in our Champions League semi-final win over Barcelona.
However, the 28-year-old has made just three substitute appearances for Liverpool this season, and couldn’t face Manchester United at the weekend.
Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch shared his theory as to why the Swiss attacker wasn’t featuring for us. Speaking to the Irish Independent (h/t Express), he said:
“He can make a difference. My issue when he played at Stoke was that while, obviously, he could look brilliant, there were times when there was a lot of tactical ill-discipline.
“If you’ve got a specific role to play that involves tracking back, just going and doing your own thing doesn’t really work. And I certainly don’t think that would work with Klopp.”
Shaqiri’s former teammate did claim that the winger is an excellent player and he wasn’t surprised Liverpool bought him.
Jurgen Klopp did have a falling out with Mamadou Sakho and the Frenchman was sold to Crystal Palace a couple of years ago.
Hopefully, that isn’t the case with Shaqiri and the former Inter Milan winger comes back to full fitness soon.
The 28-year-old should get some chances as we have a packed schedule and it will be interesting to see what kind of line-up Klopp fields in the next game.
