Liverpool vs Manchester City Preview: A battle for supremacy set to go down at Anfield

It’s all led up to this big moment. Liverpool have had a near-perfect season in the Premier League, only dropping points once and showcasing the heart of champions in the comeback win over Aston Villa.

But to truly assert themselves as serious contenders, they need to go through two-time defending champions Manchester City. If you are picking this fixture as part of your weekend , backing a draw is a safe option – this is one of the toughest fixtures to predict this season and the bookmakers have hedged their odds as well.

The Citizens aren’t as defensively strong as they were last time out, being forced to play Fernandinho at centre-back and struggling against mobile attackers.

This gives Liverpool the perfect opportunity to pounce on their vulnerabilities at Anfield, where they are undefeated in the league for the last 45 games!

Ederson is  for the trip after picking up a knock in their Champions League game at mid-week, but the Reds have a fully fit unit raring to take the battle to the defending champions.

Of course, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino haven’t been at their best recently. But knowing their hunger, City would be the perfect opposition to make a big impact against.

With their defence stuttering, Jurgen Klopp will unleash the chains to march his side forward and build a unbeatable lead at the top of the Premier League table. With Trent Alexander-Arnold in excellent creative shape and Andy Robertson thriving, optimism is flourishing.

But the Reds have their own defensive issues, having last kept a league clean-sheet against Sheffield United. City might be struggling defensively, but are relentless in attack.

Kevin De Bruyne’s creating chances as he wills, Sergio Aguero’s scoring them and Rahim Sterling looks a complete package set to churn up a storm at his old home.

Liverpool Predicted XI

Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Salah, Firmino, Mane.

Manchester City Predicted XI

Bravo, Walker, Stones, Fernandinho, Mendy, Rodri, De Bruyne, D. Silva, B. Silva, Aguero, Sterling.

Key Clashes

Sadio Mane vs Kyle Walker

Sadio Mane proved to be Liverpool’s hero again with a wondrous finish to the game against Aston Villa. The Senegalese winger’s elevated to a quintessential cog for the Reds and with his expert finishing and dangerous movement, fireworks will be guaranteed.

Kyle Walker had to shift in as a makeshift goalkeeper against Atalanta, but faces a bigger task keeping Mane quiet.

After Pep Guardiola , the Senegalese will be raring to prove his doubters wrong by churning up a storm and using his clinical nature to Liverpool’s advantage.

Kevin de Bruyne vs Fabinho

So knowing both team’s strengths, it’s evident that the battle will be contested in midfield. Kevin de Bruyne is arguably the most dangerous midfielder in the world right now.

Fabinho is among the best defensive midfielders. This should be a feisty battle. The Brazilian must keep a close check on de Bruyne, tracking his clever runs and stopping him from flaring in the crosses or creative passes.

If allowed to roam free, the Belgian can run riot. Fabinho must retain utmost concentration, put in strong challenges and derail his opposition’s confidence to win the mental battle.

Ditching a corporate job to follow a dream isn’t easy, but when football comes calling, who can say no? Been following the beautiful game since 1998. Liverpool addict, F1 fanatic!

Paris Saint-German eye Sadio Mane as Neymar replacement

Sadio Mane is being eyed by Paris Saint-Germain should Neymar leave the French giants, according to France Football (h/t Daily Star).

Neymar was close to leaving the club before the start of this season and PSG are keeping their options open should he move in the summer (h/t Daily Star).

Mane has been in excellent form since joining Liverpool. He won the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and has been excellent this season too.

The Senegal star has 11 goals and four assists this season and is capable of playing anywhere in the attack.

The report claims that a senior figure at PSG likes the Liverpool star and sees him as the perfect replacement for Neymar.

Liverpool can’t allow Mane to leave

The Senegal international has come leaps and bounds since his first season at Anfield. Mane is one of the most durable players in the Premier League too, and we have to keep hold of the 27-year-old.

There will always be interest in our top players and Mane is certainly one of them. He carried the goal scoring onus when Salah was struggling in the previous season too.

Jurgen Klopp has done a great job of resting and rotating the players this season.

Mane didn’t feature in our win over Bournemouth, and that rest could come good as we have a packed schedule in the coming two months.

Jurgen Klopp and Dejan Lovren

Dejan Lovren takes part in training ahead of RB Salzburg clash

Liverpool were handed a major injury boost ahead of their crunch Champions League clash against RB Salzburg on Tuesday.

Dejan Lovren limped off in the 3-0 win over Bournemouth at the weekend and had to be replaced. There was a re-jig in the defence with Joe Gomez moving to the centre-back’s role and Trent Alexander-Arnold coming on.

Liverpool would then have just two fit senior centre-backs with Joel Matip also on the injured list. However, the Liverpool Echo reports that Lovren was seen in training on Monday.

The Croatian has done a great job alongside Virgil van Dijk this season and it will be interesting to see if he starts in Austria.

Gomez also did a decent job as the right-back on Saturday against the Cherries. But the Englishman has looked a little rusty this season.

Liverpool need to avoid defeat

The Reds just need to draw at Salzburg to ensure their place in the last 16 of the competition.

However, the Austrians are in great form and have hotshot, Erling Haaland, on their side too. They troubled us at Anfield and that cannot be ruled out on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp was able to rest a few players before the clash though. Sadio Mane was given a rest while Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino didn’t feature in the Merseyside derby win.

Harry Wilson

Jurgen Klopp backs Harry Wilson to succeed once winger returns to Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp believes Harry Wilson will be a success at Anfield after his stint with Bournemouth.

The Welsh winger was excellent with Derby in the previous season and narrowly missed out on gaining promotion to the Premier League.

Wilson was part of Liverpool’s pre-season but joined Bournemouth on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old was slowly brought into Eddie Howe’s team and has become one of their best players this season.

Wilson has six goals for the Cherries and has scored some great free-kicks for them too. The Welsh international was unable to play against the Reds in the previous outing, and Klopp highlighted why the winger was sent out on loan.

The German told the Mirror that Wilson has a chance to do well at Anfield too (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“Of course he can [succeed at Anfield]. That’s why we loaned him, so he can make the steps.

“It would have been difficult for Harry and I would have loved to have had him here if we had another choice, especially when Shaq [Xherdan Shaqiri] was injured.”

Klopp also claimed he was happy that Wilson couldn’t feature against the Reds and highlighted his free-kick abilities.

The manager added that Wilson was at the Cherries to improve his all-round game.

Wilson has to take his chance

The Welsh winger has to impress for the remainder of the season if he wants to be part of the Liverpool squad next season.

The Reds can do with quality cover for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. However, Wilson has to improve his game further.

Harvey Elliott is another youngster who has impressed since joining the Reds this season, and it will be interesting to see if the former Fulham winger gets more first-team minutes.

Wilson has to improve his consistency during the 90 minutes as he is often left out of the game, and hopefully, he does that in the coming months.
