This is FSG’s second such investment, ent in the club following the redevelopment of the main stand-in 2016. It added 8,500 seats to take the capacity of the stadium to 54,742.

The club are now focused on expanding the stadium to accommodate over 60000 fans. However, the project is still in the nascent stages.

Liverpool initially had permission to add 4800 extra seats to the Anfield Road End. Work on the stand was expected to start immediately post the opening of the main stand in 2016. The club, however, chose to let the permit expire in order to submit an improved plan.

FSG can now cash in on the club’s on-field success by submitting an ambitious and improved plan.

The club began to consult the public regarding the proposed redevelopment in November 2019. A representation was sought from among supporters, local businesses and residents to voice their opinions.

Success on and off the pitch

This has led to an increase of 7000 seats that will take the stadium’s capacity to 61000 plus. This should make Anfield the third biggest stadium in terms of capacity with only Old Trafford and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium above on the list. (h/t Statista)

Initial consultations led to the plans being redrawn. These fresh plans will be the basis for the second round of consultations to begin this month. Once the consultations are successfully completed, the club will seek planning permission.

Liverpool are the defending European and World Champions. They also look likely with each passing day to end the season as Champions of England as well. The club is doing extremely well both on and off the field and FSG have successfully turned around the struggling side they inherited in 2010.
