Local Liverpool lad Layton Stewart has penned his first professional contract with the Reds. (h/t Liverpoolfc
)The 17-year-old striker has been at the Academy for ten years now, having joined at the age of seven. Renowned for his passing ability and movement, the youngster scored twice on his Under-18 debut this season as Liverpool beat Blackburn 7-1.
Stewart has also played a key role in Liverpool’s UEFA Youth Cup run this season. He added crucial goals against Napoli and Genk while assisting the winner against RB Salzburg, as the Reds came from two goals down to win in stoppage time. The win ensured that Liverpool leapfrogged their Austrian rivals to the top of Group E
.His performances have seen him even appear for Neil Critchley’s Under-23 side in the Leasing.com trophy. Stewart featured against Fleetwood Town and Accrington Stanley, scoring against the latter.
The 17-year-old was part of Critchley’s matchday squad for the Carabao Cup quarter-finals against Aston Villa in December. The youngster did not feature as the Reds put out what was then the youngest team in Liverpool history.
Stewart last played for the Under-18s in January where he scored a hat-trick against Sunderland.
