Liverpool went down 1-0 in their Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash against Atletico Madrid. Marking only our third loss of the season so far, the damage is minimal but this should be treated as an important learning curve in our progress this term.
As the defending champions in the elite competition, there is a certain level of expectations that need to be met. However, the loss is certainly not the end of the world. And Joe Gomez does seem to echo these thoughts.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Gomez said:
“It’s disappointing and not something we’re used to”.
“But if anything, it just gives us that motivation to bounce back and make it right as quickly as possible. Sometimes it happens and you need to take the positives from it,” he added.
Despite maintaining the lion’s share of the possession in the match, Liverpool failed to come back after a Saul Niguez goal put Atletico in the driver’s seat.
“It gives us that hunger again – not that we didn’t have it but we just want to bounce back and make it right. That’s what we’ll try to do,” he concluded.
The return leg will prove to be crucial for us and we must do everything possible to ensure we register a win at Anfield. With a potential Premier League title win on the horizon, we must avoid any sort of slip-ups and remain focused for the remainder of the season. Let’s hope the rest of the team aligns with Gomez as far as this positive attitude is concerned.
