Liverpool star sends out a sensible message to his teammates after UCL shock

Jordan Henderson calls on Liverpool to end the season on a high

Reds skipper Jordan Henderson expects Liverpool to use the heartbreak from the loss against Atletico Madrid to power them to their first Premier League title.

The Merseysiders dominated for large parts of the game. Ultimately their errors cost them as the Spaniards ended up winning 3-1 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.

The 29-year-old returned from injury and led his team with distinction as the Reds at one point looked to have turned the tie around following a difficult loss at the Wanda Metropolitano. The players looked to have learned their lessons well as they were much more incisive in their play yesterday night.

Speaking after the game, Henderson stressed on the need to keep moving ahead in spite of the disappointment created by the loss.

‘Tonight and tomorrow it will not feel nice, but we’ve got to use it and finish the season well.

The Reds just a couple of weeks ago looked on course for a treble. But defeats to Chelsea and now Atletico have knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup and the Champions League respectively.

Jurgen Klopp’s side still has a 25 points lead over Manchester City in the league and can secure the title if they secure six more points from the final nine games. They will look to reduce the gap to three when they take on Everton in the Merseyside Derby this weekend.

This was Henderson’s first appearance since the return leg in February

Henderson believes that in spite of being on the cusp of winning the club’s first league title in 30 years, he and his team will be disappointed at being unable to defend their European crown.

“We put into the game everything and we’re bitterly disappointed. We’re going to be disappointed with the goals we conceded.”

We move on!

The Liverpool skipper admitted that the club has endured similar heartbreaks in the past and will need to learn from these bitter experiences and do better in the future.

Henderson returned to lead his team with distinction

Although disappointed in spite of the good performance, Henderson credited Atletico keeper Jan Oblak for his role in thwarting the Reds. He admitted that the Reds’ lack of killer instinct coupled with the keeper’s performance prevented his side from scoring a third.

“The lads gave everything as they always do. That’s the way they play, it’s hard to play against. They defend very well. But we still created a lot of chances.”

Liverpool famously recovered from the heartbreak at Kyiv to go win the UEFA Champions League the following season. The Reds now overwhelming favourites to win the Premier League, just a season after missing out by a point.

Henderson’s assertion that the club will move forward could turn out to be prophetic if the Reds have another crack at securing their seventh European crown next season.
