Liverpool legend Steve Nicol attacks Mo Salah by calling him the ‘most frustrating player’

According to ESPN FC (h/t Express), Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has launched an extraordinary attack on current Reds superstar Mohamed Salah following our loss to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

Salah was labelled the Premier League’s most frustrating player by Nicol in spite of an immensely successful two and a half seasons at the club. Since joining in 2017, the Egyptian has gone on to score an incredible 91 goals and 37 assists in just 141 appearances. He scored his 70th goal in his 100th Premier League game season last week, surpassing Luis Suarez to become Liverpool’s second-highest Premier League scorer.

Nicol believes that the Egyptian is too wasteful and has become an annoyance to watch. Speaking on the show, he went on to state that the player blows hot and cold and his performances leave spectators frustrated.

The former defender states that the Egyptian is capable of both the sublime and the ridiculous, and says that this disparity goes under the radar given Liverpool’s impressive run of victories.

It is true that Salah does make errors in judgment at times, just like any other player. It is possible that he has set a high benchmark given his debut season and everything since pales in comparison because of that.

In spite of being called out, Salah has scored 16 times this season and isn’t far off from securing his third golden boot in a row. The forward has scored more goals in his first 100 games than any other player in Liverpool history – all the more impressive when one considers the other names on the list.

The other side of the coin

Speaking on TalkSport (h/t Express), another former Liverpool player, Danny Murphy, however, spoke of the Egyptian international in different terms. He believes that in spite of being frustrating, Salah will go down as a Liverpool legend.

Primarily a winger rather than a forward, Murphy believes that it is difficult to gauge the player’s effectiveness, considering he starts out wide.

“To score this many goals so quickly from that wide position is sensational.”

He also went on to praise the forward for his consistency and durability, and called him one of the club’s best purchases in the last ten years.
