Liverpool donate £40,000 to foodbanks after coronavirus affects collections

According to their official website, Liverpool have decided to step in and pledge their support to the initiative ‘Fans Supporting Foodbanks’ (FSF) in light of the league’s suspension following the coronavirus pandemic.

The Premier League suspended all fixtures until at least April 3 due to the prevailing emergency. This will particularly affect the ability of FSF to collect donations from home games.

Approximately 25% of its donations come from matchday collections and the suspension will affect the organization’s ability to help the city’s most vulnerable. The Reds first-team squad and the LFC Foundation have committed to jointly donating £10,000 per game for the four remaining league fixtures scheduled to be played at Anfield in the 2019-20 season. This gesture will ensure that the food bank continues to function.

Apart from the above-mentioned donation, Liverpool will also provide monetary assistance to the North Liverpool Foodbank. The excess food at Melwood and Anfield will also be donated while the club’s staff will continue to donate internally.

Alternative measures taken

The club has also ensured that food donation points have been set up in all club stores in the city. Fans are encouraged to make their donations at these locations at a time of grave importance.

Giving back to society

The LFC Foundation staff will support the initiative by arranging the collection and distribution of food donations during the period of Premier League suspension.

The director of the LFC Foundation, Matt Parish believes that it is necessary for the club to help the foodbank overcome the shortfall given the circumstances.

“We hope the collective backing of the club’s first-team players, LFC Foundation and Red Neighbours programmes, and staff, can help to alleviate concerns around the absence of the usual matchday collections.”

He praised the fans for their continued support of FSF and has urged them to make a donation at any of the collection points or online.
