Trent Alexander-Arnold opens up on Barcelona admiration

Liverpool youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold has come a long way since making his debut in the EFL Cup against Tottenham Hotspur in 2016. Just two years later, he was a regular in the starting XI and was playing in the Champions League final.

Although that ended in heartbreak, he would go on to become a European Champions just a season later after having hoodwinked the mighty Barcelona all at the age of 20.

The full-back’s quick thinking for Liverpool’s fourth has gone down in Anfield folklore and will be remembered for years to come. After contributing to Liverpool’s sixth European crown he is now closing in on Liverpool’s first title in 30 years.

In an interview with GQ magazine (h/t Mirror), Trent admitted that he holds a soft spot for the Catalans. He admitted that he was a Celtic fan growing up. That allegiance looks to have somewhat dwindled following Steven Gerrard’s takeover at arch-rivals Rangers.

The 21-year-old surprisingly revealed that his other favourite team is Barcelona. Not that it showed when he was busy putting them to the sword at Anfield last May. Trent believes that the Catalans have the same belief and values as Liverpool, explaining his affinity to them.

“I’d say my favourite other team would be Barca. I feel as though they’ve got kind of the same values and beliefs as Liverpool.”

No reason to worry!

In spite of the player’s interest in the Catalan giants, he is in no way inclined to push for a transfer to sunny Spain.

Trent revealed that he has never thought of leaving the Reds. Having grown up as a Liverpool fan, Trent is happy to play for his boyhood club and has no reason to leave.

“I’ve always loved Liverpool. I’ve always supported them. I’ve always played for them. So, I’ve never had that reason to think about it.”

The player is completely happy at Anfield and given his personal connection to the club, fans will not have to worry about him angling for a move.

Trent came through the Liverpool academy and has made 125 appearances for the Reds. Initially starting out as a midfielder, the youngster is now one of the best full-backs in Europe.

A new breed of player, the 21-year-old leads the list of a new breed of full-backs who contribute to the attack as much as they do to the defence. His proficiency on the deal ball also adds a further layer to this immensely talented player’s repertoire.
