Maxi Rodriguez lied to Rafael Benitez to complete Liverpool switch

According to Daily Star, former Liverpool star Maxi Rodriguez has revealed that he lied to Rafael Benitez that he could speak English so that he could make the switch to Anfield.

A fan favourite, Rodriguez spent three seasons at Liverpool before moving on. He made 17 goals and seven assists in 73 appearances for the club during his time on Merseyside.

He was a part of the Reds squad that clinched the 2011/12 League Cup under Kenny Dalglish, they also came close to winning the FA Cup only to fall agonizingly close to Chelsea.

All these would have not been possible had it not been for that one lie. Considering he did not know the language, we believe he did pretty well, especially given the scouse lingo.

Looking back, Rodriguez revealed that Benitez made it clear to him that it was important to speak English in the dressing room. The player would later go on to answer in the affirmative when asked if he could do so.

“He asked me if I knew how to speak the language and I said ‘yes, of course, stay calm.”

Little did the Spanish manager know that the only English word Rodriguez knew was to say ‘hello’. He accepted it to the boss prior to a press conference which they were supposed to take together. Rodriguez’s admission looks to have touched the Spaniard’s nerve although he chose to see the funny side of it.

“Rafa said ‘you’re a son of a b****.”

Lying isn’t advisable but surely, the harmless one told here worked out well for both the player and the club. A technically-gifted player, he scored two impressive hat-tricks in the 2010-11 season. After all, how often can one claim to be the best South American player at the club in a side that had Luis Suarez?
