Liverpool in talks with Chelsea star Willian over shock Anfield move

According to Sport (h/t Metro), Liverpool could be on the verge of landing Chelsea’s Willian on a free transfer in the summer, seven years after missing out on him.

The Brazilian midfielder is in the last days of his contract at Chelsea and can join the Reds on a free once it expires. Willian is keen on extending at Chelsea, but has baulked at the club’s terms and is ready to make a move. Liverpool have now moved in to offer the player what has been described favourable terms.

It will in a way bring things full circle, with us having missed out on the player earlier. The Reds actively pursued the player in 2013 only for us to be trumped by Tottenham who then got played by Chelsea. Any attempt to sign him will not be easy, with Barcelona and Arsenal also among the interested parties.

Willian had earlier admitted to his preference for staying in England. This should give us a good shot at landing him. A versatile midfielder, Willian is capable of playing in a variety of positions. He is vastly experienced in the Premier League and has made 226 appearances in the competition.

A shrewd transfer

With the club’s financials not immune to the shutdown, it is unsure how it will affect our capability to compete in the transfer market.

Liverpool have a reasonably young squad with a number of, talents coming through. Yet the chance to sign a vastly experienced midfielder in the mould of Willian should not be passed over.

Available for a free, he will add both quality and experience and could turn out to be an astute piece of business. At 31, he still has a couple of seasons left in him and will offer Jurgen Klopp more options.

With the transfer fee waived, the Reds have leeway in restructuring finances to offer the player a good deal. Willian has scored three goals and one assist against the Reds. (h/t Transfermarkt)
