Loris Karius backed to rebuild career at Liverpool

According to Football Insider (h/t Express), Kevin Phillips has backed Liverpool outcast Loris Karius to be given a second chance at Anfield.

The German goalkeeper has not played for the Reds in a competitive fixture since his horror show in Kyiv. With the player seemingly unable to cope with the after-effects of the match, Liverpool shipped him out to Besiktas on a two-year loan. He has gone on to make 62 appearances for the Turkish giants.

The Turks have no plans to trigger the £7.25million clause in his contract to make the switch permanent. With another year left on his contract, Karius is expected to return to Liverpool this summer.

With Alisson Becker in goal at Anfield, Karius will have to play the role of a reserve keeper. According to Phillips, the German will make for a much more dependable backup when compared to Adrian. The Spaniard joined Liverpool on a free transfer last summer and has enjoyed a mixed bag of results.

His heroics in the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea was offset by his error in the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid. He has also been touted to leave in search of regular football at the end of the season.

Such an event would leave the Reds short of a dependable backup. If Phillips is to be believed, that player can be Karius.

“I think he is probably a better second choice”

Phillips rates the German above Adrian and believes Klopp will favour his countryman over Adrian as Alisson’s understudy next season.

Away from the pressure

Karius is by no means a bad keeper. He has not been the same since that night in Kyiv and could do well to have the opportunity for redemption.

As a backup, he will not be in the media spotlight as much and can quietly and steadily resurrect his career. Karius was looking increasingly comfortable in goal leading up to the disaster class in Kyiv. Hopefully, the low profile will help him recapture his best form.
