PSG lining up £50m move for Liverpool defender Joel Matip

According to a report from Cameroonian outlet Kick442 (h/t Mirror), French champions Paris Saint-Germain are eyeing a swoop for Liverpool defender Joel Matip in the ongoing transfer window.

Having moved to Anfield from Schalke in 2016 on a free transfer, Matip has to be one of the best bargain transfers in recent years. In spite of having had his fair share or injury troubles of late, the Cameroonian has been quite excellent for us during his four-year stint.

In the season gone by, Matip once again had to battle with injuries, which restricted him to just 13 appearances across all competitions, in which he contributed with a couple of goals. But the fact that the club had handed him a long-term contract in October last year shows his standing within Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

PSG, however, are reportedly planning to pry Matip away from Anfield this summer. As per the report, they eye the 28-year-old as the ideal replacement for veteran defender Thiago Silva, who left after his contract expired.

To that end, the Ligue 1 champions are planning to make a £50m offer in order to secure the Cameroonian defender’s signing. (h/t Mirror

While that is a significant sum, it is very much unlikely that Jurgen Klopp will agree to a sale. After having allowed Dejan Lovren to leave for Zenit St. Petersburg already, we are a player short in the central defensive department.

So, selling Matip would prove to be counter-productive in the summer. He may have not played much last season, but the 28-year-old is a quality option to fall back on when fit and available. So, a move to Parc des Princes seems like a distant possibility.
