Celtic weighing up move for Taiwo Awoniyi

According to the Daily Star, Liverpool forward Taiwo Awoniyi has emerged as a transfer target for Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in the ongoing transfer window.

The 23-year-old has been with Liverpool for five years now, having joined from the Imperial Academy in his homeland of Nigeria. However, he is yet to make a single first-team appearance for the Reds. Instead, he has been farmed out on loan year after year.

Awoniyi has had temporary stints with FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron, Gent and most recently 1.FSV Mainz 05. His stint in Germany in 2019/20 was a forgettable one, as he managed just 12 appearances, scoring a solitary goal. (h/t Transfermarkt)

In spite of that, Celtic are now interested in signing up the Nigerian forward permanently, as they stare at the prospect of losing star forward Odsonne Edouard this summer. (h/t Daily Star)

Awoniyi still has three years left on his current contract with Liverpool. However, it is quite evident that the versatile forward is nowhere near being a part of the plans under Jurgen Klopp.

So, cashing in on him this summer, rather than loaning him out for another campaign, would be the best course of action for all parties involved.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are proceeding with caution this summer because of the impact of the pandemic on the finances. So, generating funds from the sales of players like Awoniyi, who is not in the first-team plans would be the right thing to do.
