Liverpool ace Georginio Wijnaldum agrees Barcelona transfer

According to Spanish publication Sport (h/t Express), Liverpool midfield mainstay Georginio Wijnaldum is closing in on a summer switch to Barcelona, having agreed a three-year contract with the La Liga giants.

The 29-year-old has been with Liverpool since 2016, having joined from Newcastle United. During his time at the club, Wijnaldum has been a pivotal member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, playing a key role in our UEFA Champions League and Premier League triumphs.

However, Gini has entered the final year of his contract with the club. And there have been no talks over a new deal forthcoming from the club. In fact, it has even been claimed in the tabloids that the Dutchman could be allowed to leave this summer, in order to make room for Thiago Alcantara. (h/t The Telegraph)

“That’s an open contract situation, otherwise we would know. It’s all between us and the player, these kind of things. It’s all good at the moment, all fine. Gini played very well in pre-season and has obviously had a couple of good seasons for us. That’s all I can say about that.”

And now, it seems that Wijnaldum has his heart set on a transfer to Barcelona, where he will be reuniting with his former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman. The 29-year-old is likely to command a transfer fee of between £13m and £18m, and will be signing a three-year contract with the Catalan giants. (h/t Express)

With there being little progress made on the contract negotiations front, we could be destined to lose Wijnaldum this summer. The 29-year-old has been a top professional for the club during is four-year stint. But if we end up replacing him with Thiago, it might turn out to be a win-win for all parties.
