Liverpool continue to press for the signing of Thiago Alcantara

After a variety of contradicting and supporting reports over the last many weeks, the Express are now claiming that Liverpool and Bayern Munich are in the advanced stages of completing the transfer of Thiago Alcantara.

Liverpool are going to enter the new Premier League season as the holders, and that’s something the Reds haven’t done in the longest time. If we kick off the campaign in the same style as last time around, things could be smooth flowing. But, in the event that the fragility from the post-lockdown period returns, Jurgen Klopp would have quite the task on his hands.

To go into a new league campaign without making any marquee signings isn’t unlike Liverpool. Considering the rate at which our competition has been doing business though, it might not be the worst idea to bring some high-quality players through the door before next season commences.

One of the players that they have reportedly been chasing is Bayern Munich’s Spanish playmaker Thiago Alcantara. Although Bayern Munich were said to be confident in July that Thiago would sign a new contract, it’s not beginning to look like the Spaniard’s future could be away from the Allianz Arena. Klopp’s available transfer budget has been extremely limited, with the worldwide pandemic even affecting the finances of a footballing superpower like Liverpool. The only signing that we’ve made so far is that of Greek full-back Kostas Tsimkas. That move too, was completed almost entirely using the transfer fee received for the sale of Croatian centre-half Dejan Lovren earlier in the window.

Thiago is among the highest-rated midfielders in all of Europe, and with good reason. Having been a Bayern Munich player for a while now, the Spaniard has the experience and sheer footballing know-how to walk into most midfield rosters in the world.

The 29-year-old has made just under 400 appearances over the course of his career, while he boasts a commendable 39 caps for the Spanish national side as well.

Capable of moving the ball around quickly and creating gaps in between opposition lines, signing Thiago has the potential to hoist this Liverpool squad to the next level. Whether or this deal ends up taking shape remains to be seen, but if the reports are to be believed, then a transfer is perhaps closer than many are led to believe.
