Jurgen Klopp delivers intriguing update on midfield star’s Liverpool future

Jurgen Klopp provides update on the future of Georginio Wijnaldum

Even with the 2020/21 Premier League season official kicking off in Saturday night, there have been no shortage of transfer talk surrounding all of the biggest clubs. While it must be conceded that Liverpool have arguably been linked with the least number of players of all the top six, the talk of potential outgoings have been relatively limited as well.

The most concerning of them has been that of key midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. The former Newcastle United man has been linked with a potential move to Spanish giants Barcelona. And Jurgen Klopp has issued an update on the matter of the Dutchman’s future. (h/t Mirror)

“It’s interesting, since Gini’s here, I think I’ve had five or six hundred talks with him pretty much. That’s exactly the same as always, so nothing else to say about that.”

Wijnaldum and Klopp have held positive talks

The manager appeared relaxed on the situation, insisting that all was fine and clear between him, the club and Wijnaldum. (h/t Echo)

“I cannot speak about the future in a few years but it is all fine. It’s all good for the moment. You know the situation. Between me, Gini and the club, everything is completely fine.”

The Dutchman’s importance to Jurgen Klopp’s high-intensity setup is apparent to see. And his departure would come as a gutting blow to the reigning Premier League champions.

Whether or not the former Newcastle United man is going to be Liverpool player for the remainder of the new season remains to be seen. One thing that can be said with certainty is that the Dutchman is a regular in Klopp’s midfield setup, and that his departure is sure to leave a hole in the Reds’ roster.

Wijnaldum is in the final year of his contract

Liverpool’s defence of the Premier League title isn’t going to be an easy one by any stretch of the imagination, and having to do it without Wijnaldum would be like asking for trouble. Keeping him at the club should be treated with the utmost importance, as Klopp’s team structure was one of the Reds’ biggest points of attraction last season.
