Liverpool lining up £23m summer deal for Anderlecht’s Jeremy Doku

A recent report by Het Nieuwsblad (h/t Echo) has claimed that Premier League champions Liverpool are lining up a £23m bid for Anderlecht starlet Jeremy Doku.

One of the main areas of concerns for Jurgen Klopp going into this new season will be lack of depth. In the event of a potential untimely injury to one of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, the Reds are likely to find themselves in an extremely sensitive position.

With Divock Origi the only realistic alternative for the number nine role, the Reds’ need for another attacker is only understandable. This is perhaps why Belgian ace Jeremy Doku is such an exciting prospect.

Liverpool’s winter acquisition of Japanese trickster Takumi Minamino is yet to really pay dividends. The attacker is capable of playing as a number ten, a striker or even on the flanks, and hence serves a variety of purposes under Klopp.

Despite all of this, going into a Premier League campaign without the right kind of reinforcements available on the bench would be like asking for trouble. Last season was an unparalleled exception to the matter.

Doku has reportedly been on the Merseyside club’s radar for more than two years now. It has been suggested that the Reds have now rekindled their interest in the speedster, with a purchase seemingly expected as well. Despite this, it has been clarified that the forward would likely be loaned back to Anderlecht after he’s been signed. (h/t Echo)

With no readymade replacements in the roster for the likes of Mane and Salah, Klopp needs to acquire at least one new forward ahead of the league campaign.

The aforementioned African duo has been in mercurial form over the last couple of seasons. And barring a massive turnaround, that trend is set to continue in the upcoming campaign as well. Doku, though, has the quality and potential required to step in and make a difference at Anfield in the seasons to come.

Doku is an 18-year-old winger who’s capable of operating anywhere across the frontline. A skilled dribbler with the ball at his feet, Doku’s ability to get past defenders using his explosive pace will be exactly what Klopp is after.

The youngster recently made his debut for the Belgian national side, scoring his first-ever goal for the Red Devils along the way as well. Doku would be a good investment for the future, and signing him would be quite the coup by Liverpool.
