Liverpool looking to replace Lovren with Sampdoria’s Omar Colley

Liverpool have kicked off the new Premier League season in the right manner, after picking up an enjoyable 4-3 victory over newly-promoted Leeds United. For all the good attacking play they produced, it must be conceded that their defending was questionable all through the night.

Jurgen Klopp’s staff have very little to address this concern in the transfer market, and that’s sure to come up as an issue at some point in the season. To this end, SampNews24 (via HITC h/t Liverpool Echo) are claiming that the Reds have set their eyes on Sampdoria defender Omar Colley.

Liverpool don’t boast the most comfortable of depth in defensive positions right now, owing largely to the summer sale of Dejan Lovren. Having cashed in on one of their four senior centre-halves, the Reds now don’t possess first-team quality or squad depth required to sustain last season’s form.

While the dominant presence of Virgil Van Dijk will undoubtedly help their cause to a certain extent, the Dutchman showed that even he’s human with a poor mistake against Leeds United on the weekend.

Lovren served Liverpool for quite a while, although his stint at the club will probably not live the test of time. Despite gradually developing into an important figure on the pitch and in the dressing room, the World Cup finalist will forever be remembered for the negatives rather than the positives.

The defender’s Liverpool career was filled with mistakes and that’s why his sale to Zenit St.Petersburg in the summer didn’t come as too much of a surprise. And in order, to replace him, the club are now looking at Sampdoria’s Omar Colley, who has a release clause of just £10.8m.

Colley was a late bloomer into the world of European football, as the 27-year-old only arrived at Sampdoria just a couple of summers ago after having spent time at the likes of Genk and KuPS in the past.

After the Serie A switch, the Gambian defender has been nothing short of a sensation. Standing at over 1.9m tall and dominant in the air, Colley’s addition would go a long way towards this Liverpool side achieving their preset goals in the 20/21 Premier League campaign.
