Jorge Mendes helped Liverpool sign Diogo Jota and Fabinho Tavares
A report by The Athletic (h/t Daily Star) shed light on Liverpool improving their relations with one of football’s most powerful agents, Jorge Mendes. The report mentions how relations between the club and the agent have improved significantly since the club’s failure to sign Diego Costa, a player managed by Mendes.
Liverpool were primed to pair Luis Suarez with Diego Costa but the deal didn’t materialize. Costa renewed his contract at Atletico Madrid and later left La Liga for Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2014.
Since then, the club has enjoyed improved relations with Jorge Mendes, which has seen the Reds land two important players in Fabinho and Diogo Jota.
It is said that Mendes helped Liverpool to quietly sign Fabinho in the summer of 2018 before convincing Wolves manager (who is also managed by Mendes) that selling Jota to Liverpool is vital to Wolves’ recruitment policy. (h/t Daily Star)
Fabinho has gone on to become a key part of our team and has offered the solidity we were used to seeing in our midfield when Javier Mascherano donned the famous red kit.
Jota, on the other hand, has had a flying start to the season and looks like the ideal backup to our front three. The 23-year-old has already scored 7 goals this season, averaging a goal every 84 minutes.
Jorge Mendes is one of the most influential men in football, representing figures like Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho while being the head of a major sports agency. The super-agent has been involved in countless high-profile deals over the years.
Mendes’s agency GestiFute represents an array of world-class players and managers. A healthy and positive relationship with the Portuguese agent would benefit any club, as has been the case with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
